Reloading Podcast 581 – ReloadShoving the shoulder, why?

Hello, and welcome to the Reloading Podcast here on the Firearms Radio Network.

Tonight the gang is talking about moving the shoulder back on necked cartridges and why or why not it’s important.

We push the shoulder back on our fired cases during full length sizing. This allows the case to fit back into the chamber freely without stressing the action or causing the case to develop uneven contact points, any of this would lead to in-accuracy. Other problems that could happen is galling of the bolt lugs. How we get to pushing the shoulder back can be done in different ways. Use a Full Length Die, Next we have a Shoulder Bump Neck Size die. Some Body dies will push the shoulder while not touching the neck. Neck sizing works for a limited time or until the case becomes so tight in the guns chamber that it becomes almost impossible to close the bolt. How much do we set back the shoulder?  I use 0.0015” to 0.002” for bolt actions. Take a caliper and close the jaws to zero then open to 0.0015 or 0.002” you have to hold it up to the light just to see how little we are pushing back shoulders, for bolt guns. Single shots need the full 0.002” to 0.0025” or 0.003” with falling block action not having much camming power. Lastly we deal with Semi-auto actions, in some ways they have little camming power, and in other ways with bolt force (action slamming) it can force the case into the chamber. Crushing it into the chamber. So now we set the shoulder back 0.003” to 0.004”. This allows the cartridge to fit without damage to cartridge.
