Reloading Podcast 377 – the brass ring

Hello, and welcome to the Reloading Podcast here on the Firearms Radio Network.

Tonight the gang are answering a question.

  • Hello, I am a fan and listener of the podcast. Thank you for all the good content you guys (and gal) put out. I have been reloading handgun for the past couple years on a Dillon 550 (9mm, .38 special and 45 auto). In my early reloading days I attempted loading 223 but could not get past the brass prep – sorting by headstamp, measuring case length and ultimately multiple stuck cases in my resizing die were as far as I got. I continued to load thousands of handgun rounds and never looked back at rifle rounds. Lately, I have had a bee in my bonnet to load more calibers than just handgun. I would like to take the plunge into 300BLK subsonic loads. Looking at my Hodgdon reloading manual, the pressures for 220gr subs vs 125gr supers is significantly less and I am not looking for benchrest competition accuracy. I want to continue to load on my dillon 550 and replicate my handgun loading process as much as possible. I know I know I cannot have my cake and eat it too. However, with 300BLK subs, would it be reasonable to use mixed headstamp brass and load on a Dillon 550 using all 4 stations? Appreciate your support Best, Caffeinated Chimp

PS – I am happy to start a GoFundMe for a new chair for Jim, I believe we would all benefit from this 🙂

  • Subject: 9mm brass Message: Hey guys love the show. I was recently running some 9mm and noticed a ring on the inside of the case about 1/4” down from the mouth. This is the 2nd reload. It all seems to be the same brass stamped WMA 18. Is this a warning sign for case head separation? There’s no ring on the outside. I appreciate the help. I’ve learned a lot from your podcast keep it up! Adam
