News brought to you by Colby Valve

  • Motor Trend – Wrangler 4xe Fire Recall Risk
    • The Jeep Wrangler 4xe recall for 2021 to 2023 models.
    • PHEVs need to be parked outside until the vehicle is fixed by their dealers.
    • exact root of the problem hasn’t been identified with, but it has to do with a fault in the high-voltage battery of the 4xe, and it’s known that it can cause a fire.
    • The build range of affected vehicles is from September 18, 2020, through March 22, 2023. The battery cells that are suspect were built between January 21, 2021 and October 2, 2021.
    • The good news is that these cells were only used on Wrangler 4xe PHEVs, and no other Jeep 4xe or hybrid vehicles manufactured by Stellantis have been issued a recall notice for a similar issue.
    • For now, the NHTSA and Jeep are advising owners of 2021 to 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEVs to park outside and not to charge these vehicles until a fix is made
    • only two Wrangler 4xe SUVs have been lost due to fire starting at the high-voltage battery. Stellantis and the NHTSA are unaware of any other fires due to the faulty cell, so the advice is precautionary but highly advised until the fault is identified.
    • For now, Jeep will perform a software flash on the high-voltage battery pack on these affected Wrangler 4xe PHEVs.
    • This new software looks for any faults in the battery pack and, if a DTC is set, the entire pack will be replaced by Stellantis at no charge to the customer.
    • If you’ve had a battery pack replaced or repaired related to the issue (minus the fire) and had to pay for it out-of-pocket, you may be entitled to reimbursement from Stellantis due to this recall.
    • Notices of the recall will be sent to all owners of affected Wrangler 4xe PHEVs on January 11, 2024, with dealers receiving the same notice on or about that same time.

  • Car Buzz – Scout to Arrive Sooner Than We Thought
    • The revived Scout brand has confirmed that its first model will debut in Q3 2024
    • SUV, followed by a truck
    • Since Scout was iconically a rugged SUV brand, that’s what we’ll bring to life first,” he clarified. “Scout did do a pickup truck and we’ll launch that, let’s say, six, seven months after.”
    • Keogh also confirmed Magna Steyr’s involvement in developing the Scout EVs. However, he doubled down that production would be in America, specifically in South Carolina, and that Scout engineers would be the ones “driving” the development.
    • VW reportedly invested nearly $500 million at Magna Steyr for the Scout EVs. The Austrian third-party production firm is known for developing the Mercedes-Benz G-Class – a German off-roader with a robust platform that spans generations.
    • Keogh put a nail in the coffin of rumors surrounding the Scout EVs’ platform. The company won’t be retooling VW’s MEB platform – the same one used by the ID.7 sold in the US. In fact, he said there’s a possibility of the VW Group using Scout’s newly developed platform instead.
    • “Not gonna happen,” Keogh told Automotive News. “This is 100 percent capable, American, robust, full platform.”
    • He also confirmed that the platform’s design was already completed via CAD and on paper. The only thing left to happen is the execution in the real world. “The major architectural requirements and the major architectural underpinnings are dialed in,” assured the CEO.
    • With a Q3 2024 debut, it will be less than a year before Scout reveals its SUV. We’ll likely see teasers early next year, or maybe a design preview. In Keogh’s words, “The design of the product is, I would say, 85, 90, 95 percent of the way there.”

Fast Five Facts

  1. New or old vehicle?
  2. Summer or winter camping?
  3. Rock, Sand, Snow or Mud?
  4. Favorite vehicle brand?
  5. Favorite tire?

Any recommendations for someone new to off-roading

Tell us about you

How did you get started in off-roading?

What was the first vehicle you took off road?

What’s your favorite rig to hit the trail in?

What’s your most embarrassing moment on the trail?

Do you have a biggest win on the trail?

Where is your favorite place to wheel?

Any places you want to go that you haven’t gone to?

Tell us about your business

How long does it take for the patch to set and be driveable?

If a rig is aired way down will the patch flex while I continue wheeling down the trail over rocks and obstacles?

How long can someone (cough, Ben who has Patagonia tires) drive on a patched tire?

Can they be used in other places besides sidewalls?

If I’ve had a patch kit for a while do I need to replace any of the parts because of an expiration date?

Are there times where you have to make the repair from the inside of the tire?

Can you talk us through the process of how someone would use Glue Tread to repair a slice through a raised letter portion of the sidewall?

What is the gnarliest repair you have seen get fixed?

Is there an instance where Glue Tread isn’t the right tool for the job with tire drama?

I love that you also make these for agricultural use. Is it a different compound or patch size? I ask because I have a tractor and wonder if I could throw a patch from a 4×4 kit on it in a pinch.

Have you seen Any non tire uses for glue tread?
