News brought to you by Colby Valve

  • Opposite Lock – One Of The Most Epic Baja Stories Ever
    • Wouter Jan Van Dijk is a motocross enduro rider from Australia
    • Wouter made the late decision that he wanted to race the Baja 1000 this year.
    • He has no sponsor involvement, no team, and no crew, just an idea.
    • This also means no co-riders for the race. While most competitors only do a section of the course before handing the bike off, Wouter decided to do all 1,300 miles on his own.
    • Furthermore, while most competitors spend days or even weeks prerunning the course, Wouter decided to tackle it blind with just the route instructions given at the start. And what high end bike did he bring for such a difficult task? Nothing. He didn’t bring a bike
    • He flew to San Diego, bought a bike off craigslist (allegedly it’s a 2015 KTM), hand-drew numbers on it, bought a small tent and some camping gear, and rode down to the southern tip of the Baja peninsula to start the race (the course runs south-to-north this year).  His only gear was what he carried down with him.
    • The subframe cracked on the way down, and the tires were bald.
    • He was also told he would need to find additional safety gear in order to pass tech and enter the race.
    • Between his sheer determination and the support of the off road community he managed to find what he needed, fix his bike, and at 1:32 AM local time on Thursday he started the Baja 1000.
    • Wouter started strong, at one point even leading his class. With no GPS nav unit though he would have to stop at camps along the way to figure out where he was. As day turned to night his story started to spread through the peninsula. He would roll into teams’ pit areas, having no idea what team they were, and the pit crews would feed him and help him out how they could (which on one occasion included pulling the cactus needles out of his arm).
    • His story had gone viral and thousands of people were watching his GPS tracking dot blip its way up the course. Finally, just over 48 hours after starting, Wouter crossed the finish line in Ensenada, achieving something that many of the “more prepared” competitors couldn’t. Instant Baja legend.
  • Jalopnik – GMC Put A Six Month Ownership Requirement In The Warranty For The 2024 Canyon AT4X
    • Flipping is when you buy a popular or desirable car just to resell it to someone else for more money and is a pain for every automaker with a desirable model.
    • GM is one of a handful of automakers fighting back against flipping. GMC put language in the warranty of the Canyon AT4X that will void certain parts of the truck’s warranty if a buyer flips it.
    • It requires a six month ownership period for both the Canyon AT4X and the AT4X AEV Edition, which we know are both high priced off road versions of the Canyon.
    • If a buyer gets greedy and flips it before those six months, they’ll find these parts of the truck’s warranty voided:
      • Bumper to bumper warranty
      • Powertrain warranty
      • Sheet metal coverage
      • Tire Coverage
      • Accessory coverage
    • General Motors has placed similar ownership requirements on other high-demand enthusiast vehicles:
      • 2023 and 2024 Corvette Z06
      • 2024 Corvette E-Ray
      • 2023 and 2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup & SUV
      • 2023 and 2024 Cadillac Escalade-V.
    • General Motors previously instated an ownership requirement of 12 months, but later reduced the requirement to six months.
    • Additionally, some Chevy owners were offered 500,000 My Chevrolet Rewards points, a $5,000 value, for retaining ownership of their new vehicle for the duration of the required ownership period.
