Off Road Podcast 430 – Moab Trip Report

https://linktr.ee/offroadpodcast

This episode of the Off Road Podcast is Sponsored by WARN, Colby Valve, and 4Patriots.

Tonight, Aaron drags a van, Coy is lazy, & Ben packs his bags

Welcome to the off-road podcast. A podcast about everything off-road. We cover the news, review products, and interview people in the off road industry.  Your hosts tonight are Aaron, Coy and my name is Ben.  Welcome to the show.

Coy – nothing

Aaron – pulled a van out of our field.  Taught some kids to play with guns.

Ben – moved trailers into shop for winter to dry them out and do some maintenance and work

When things go sideways, will you be prepared?  Some people are concerned they might have to go for a long time without electricity… or even food. Get preparedness products you can use NOW… and that could save your life later at 4 Patriots.

My favorite is 4Patriots’ NEW solar generator, the Patriot Power Generator 2000X. It uses the endless free power of the sun to power lights, your tv, medical equipment, it will even run your fridge. Plus, it’s expandable and comes with a free solar panel.

Or pick up one of 4Patriots best-selling survival food kits. Delicious-tasting and designed to last for 25 years. They even have kits with real meat. And if the power’s out, no worries. Just boil water over a fire, simmer, and serve. You’ll enjoy a hot meal and stay safe in a crisis.

More smart people than ever are finding 4Patriots. Over 2 million customers trust them. You might even have seen them on TV.

I had the folks at 4Patriots set up a special page for you at 4Patriots.com/FRN so that listeners of this podcast can see this week’s discounts and deals before they go away.

Go to 4Patriots.com/FRN.

Write in to us with something that you would like on your off road Christmas list.  We’ll be reading the entries on our Christmas gift exchange episode on November 20th and will be reading them on air and picking some at random and sending you some gifts from our sponsors.

News brought to you by Colby Valve

  • Autoblog – Toyota Land Hopper Trademarked in Japan
    • Toyota has filed a trademark application for something called the Land Hopper in Japan. It’s unknown on what vehicle the mysterious moniker will appear, but the recent 2024 Land Cruiser presentation may offer some clues.
    • The trademark filing fell into the “vehicles” category and was spotted by users on the Land Cruiser Forum. This led to speculation that it might apply to one of the vehicles shown in silhouette on screen during the Land Cruiser presentation. The image appears at the 18:39 mark of the video, in which three vehicles can be seen in profile.
    • On the left is a short-wheelbase SUV that resembles a shortened Land Cruiser. Toyota has built in prior generations shorter, two-door versions of the Land Cruiser Prado, which is the predecessor of the U.S. market’s 2024 Land Cruiser (the Prado suffix was dropped). This particular one almost looks like it could be an FJ Cruiser successor.
  • Car Buzz – Fords Shape Shifting Bronco Bumper
    • Ford may have found the perfect best-of-both-worlds solution to pedestrian-friendly bumpers that can also go off-road with a new shape-shifting bumper design that can grow or shrink depending on the scenario.
    • Cars are required to provide pedestrians with support below the knee in case of a collision in the hopes of flinging them upward instead of under the vehicle. A modern car must also leave a gap between the engine and the hood to provide a soft-ish landing. Basically, if you’re going to get run over, it’s better to be on the car rather than under it
    • The safety issue is pronounced when it comes to vehicles with a high ride height, and it’s even worse if that vehicle is equipped with a bumper designed for off-roading. When driving off-road, you need decent ground clearance and a large approach angle.
    • Ford is proposing a bumper assembly with a movable lower portion. The assembly will consist of a main bumper body, an actuator, a screw winch, a trolley, and all the mounting equipment. If the vehicle detects that a collision is imminent, an electric motor will drive the screw winch, lowering a portion of the bumper. This lower bumper will be positioned in front of and overlap with the stationary part of the bumper. Once this lower portion is in place, it will hit a pedestrian below the knees, flinging them upward for a safer outcome.
    • Ford also says it’s possible to use the car’s computing power to lower the bumper above and below a certain speed. It can likely also program the bumper to lower according to the car’s location. There are several places where a pedestrian is most likely to get knocked down, like busy intersections and roads located near schools.
    • This is not Ford’s first attempt at inventing something to protect pedestrians. Last year, it filed a patent for a front-mounted airbag that would provide a softer impact, but it’s pretty intricate and would cost a lot of money to replace.
  • Car Buzz – Defender Rival Coming as a Mini Mercedes G Class
    • At the 2023 Munich Motor Show, the CEO of Mercedes Benz said, “We have something in store for G fans around the world… there will be a little G, kind of the daughter or son of the big G.”
    • Both gas and electric versions of the baby G-Class are set to be sold
    • It may not be as rugged an off-roader as the larger G-Class
    • Speculation is that the electric version will only be a dual motor setup
    • Expect it to have over 310 miles of range while using an 800 volt electrical system.
    • An obvious rival for the Baby G would be the three-door Land Rover Defender 90.
    • It will likely still come with rear seats, but they’ll be a lot more cramped, and cargo space will shrink, too.
    • While the baby G-Class is likely to be cheaper than its bigger brother – the current G550 starts at $139,900, and the AMG G63 is $179,000 – we still expect this to be an expensive vehicle.
