News brought to you by Colby Valve

  • CarBuzz – Ford Patents Bolt On Third Axles
    • Ford is developing a bolt-on third axle that turns any pickup truck or SUV into a 6×6
    • CarBuzz discovered the patent filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and it details how it would be much more cost-effective to develop a bolt-on system for high-capacity trucks designed for existing suspension systems than it would be to develop or produce a whole new suspension design to enable higher payloads
    • the maximum payload capacity for the latest F-150 has dropped by some 860 pounds because very few customers ordered it
    • This would be especially useful on chassis-cabs where bodywork wouldn’t need to be adjusted.
    • This would be especially cost-efficient if the system could be designed simply enough for it to be installed at the dealer.  It could even be installed by the customer.
    • the design does appear to be as easy to assemble as Lego, at least in its simplest configuration.
    • One issue not mentioned here is of the need for modified bodywork to accommodate two more wheels, but a bolt-on fender kit for the bed could solve this.
    • Ford mentions using sleeved subframe and chassis extensions that could be employed, with provision made for alternative designs that work with or without a load leveling kit.
  • CarBuzz – 2023 Jeep Gladiator can be Purchased for a Steal
    • 2024. Subtle styling updates, new technology, and enhanced safety features are some big-ticket changes that have kept the rugged truck appealing for the new model year. But the new model’s arrival means some dealerships are desperate to get rid of existing 2023 inventory
    • Several examples
    • 2023 Sport 4×4 (originally priced at $52,505) shows an incredible dealer discount of $12,283, which represents a 23% reduction in price
    • The publication notes an additional 10% off MSRP Retail Bonus of $5,205. This brings the price down even further to just $34,971
    • there are reportedly 18,000 2023 Gladiators in dealer stock, and we’re guessing retailers are desperate to get them off lots and onto driveways. To help, Jeep implemented the aforementioned 10% off MSRP deal. Just over a week ago, the automaker launched an even better 15% off deal for Gladiator Sport models in California.
    • you’ll have to fork over for the new model if you want the best technology and luxury. Revisions for 2024 include a revised radiator grille, a feature-rich 12.3-inch infotainment system with Uconnect 5, and enhanced safety. All trim levels are now equipped with first- and second-row side curtain airbags, as well as second-row outboard seat belts with load limiters and pre-tensioners.
    • Aside from two new trim levels (Rubicon X and Mojave X), Jeep has also introduced a unique upfit off-road package from AEV. Pricing for the MY2024 Gladiator is yet to be released.
