News brought to you by Colby Valve

  • MotorTrend – EPA lowers scrutiny of defeat devices
    • As the well-abused news phrase goes, “in a dramatic turn of events,” the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released its final National Enforcement and Compliance Initiative for 2024 through 2027, outlining the agency’s top enforcement priorities for the coming years
    • Noticeably absent from the three-year plan is: “Stopping Aftermarket Defeat Device for Vehicles and Engines” as a top-level priority. And what are defeat devices? They’re aftermarket parts or software, such as modified exhausts or chip tuning products and services, that inhibit or bypass a vehicle’s emissions controls. Now, enforcement of aftermarket parts is once again of standard “core” importance, as it had been for many years until 2020. The change is a testament to the efforts of popular aftermarket-performance companies, SEMA, and the SEMA Garage-to develop products that meet emission standards set by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).
    • Although this is great news for makers of aftermarket ECM tuning devices and businesses, especially in the diesel segment of the aftermarket-performance industry, it does not suggest or mean that the EPA is now completely turning its back to technologies that are not compliant with CARB emission standards.  they’re definitely still watching, but apparently, it will not be at a level that brings about the shop raids and fines, that have occurred in recent years. And, for those who still don’t quite get it, setting diesel rigs up to “roll coal” will forever be a huge no-no.
    • SEMA President and CEO Mike Spagnola says “The EPA’s decision to remove enforcement against aftermarket products from the NECI and return it to a standard priority is a recognition of our industry’s commitment to emissions compliance and the progress we’ve made.
  • Inside EVs – Two Tesla Cybertrucks Spotted Testing Norcal off-road park
    • If Tesla wants to make it in North America’s highly competitive pickup truck segment, the Cybertruck must be a very versatile product,Besides being able to haul as much stuff as possible and tow heavy trailers, the Cybertruck also needs to prove itself against the competition when it comes to practicality, efficiency, and performance – both on and (especially) off the beaten track.
    • Speaking of the latter, a pair of dusty Tesla Cybertruck release candidate (RC) vehicles were spotted recently in Northern California at the Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area, just an hour’s drive south of San Jose.
    • An off-road enthusiast who goes by the name of MuddyRuttzz on YouTube was very impressed to see the Tesla Cybertrucks up close and personal, despite the fact he describes himself as a “Jeep guy and diesel guy.”
    • The video he filmed on-site shows both vehicles with the air suspension seemingly in the highest setting, revealing a generous ride height and good approach and departure angles for a truck of this size.
    • The Tesla engineers allegedly demonstrated the Cybertruck’s air suspension to him – although that’s not shown in the video – revealing the huge difference between its lowest and highest setting. The vehicles were equipped with 20-inch wheels and all-terrain tires.
    • The footage also shows one of the electric trucks climbing a hill and driving on a road, catching a glimpse of the rear-wheel steering system in action.
    • The video uploader claims the Tesla engineers who were testing the Cybertrucks at the site located in the Gabilan Mountains were very friendly and answered all of his questions.
    • Interestingly, the two Cybertrucks were accompanied by a Tesla Model X equipped with a satellite communications system. According to the video uploader, the equipment was used to send Cybertruck off-road data back to headquarters.
