  • Autoblog – Polaris wins Michigan grant to build off-road charging network
    • Two years ago, Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer’s office announced the Lake Michigan EV circuit, a network of Level 2 and DC fast chargers covering a tourist-heavy corridor along Lake Michigan
    • The Mobility Public-Private Partnership & Programming is providing Minnesota-based powersports company Polaris a $700,000 grant to build a charging network for electric off-highway vehicles (OHV) along 120 miles of the public off-road trail system in the Upper Peninsula.
    • The charge points are said to be “an integrated, scalable charging solution designed with solar production capability that can be grid-connected or operate completely off-grid,” and will work with trail-approved electric rigs like side-by-sides, ATVs, motorcycles, and snowmobiles.
    • Polaris will send Hamilton’s North Coast Adventures, a Polaris Adventures Outfitter in Ontonagon, Michigan, a fleet of Ranger XP Kinetic UTVs available for rent. Polaris has been ramping up production of its battery-electric Ranger which commenced deliveries this year.
  • The Drive – Maybe Don’t Drive a Mercedes Camper Van Up a Utah Jeep Trail With No Experience
    • A Mercedes Sprinter Van for off-road use might seem like a good idea if you watch a lot of active lifestyle YouTubers. And while they’re fine for some mild off-roading, they aren’t exactly the best-equipped vehicles for some of the United States’ more dangerous trails. That’s something one owner recently found out, hanging off of a cliff on the Honeymoon Trail in Utah.
    • This video from Matt’s Off Road Recovery, you get to see exactly why off-roading a Sprinter Van on one of America’s most difficult trails, with very little experience, is not gonna be a good time. When the channel’s host meets the Sprinter’s owner, his Mercedes is stuck on some loose, stacked gravel, leaning on its passenger side near the edge of a pretty steep drop-off. “I’ve got about four hours of off-road driving under my belt,” the owner admitted. Hey, at least he’s honest.
    • The Sprinter Van was driven out of its tough spot without any assistance from another vehicle. In a nutshell, it wasn’t really stuck as much as in a very precarious situation. Even with someone like Matt’s expertise, it still wasn’t an easy drive, though. With a raised suspension, all-terrain tires, ladders, and roof racks, a Sprinter Van might look like it can tackle anything. However, its powertrain just isn’t made for rock crawling.
  • Motorsports News Wire- California Judge Rules in Favor of SEMA, EcoLogic to Protect Motorized Recreation at Oceano Dunes
    • The California Superior Court of San Luis Obispo County ruled that the California Coastal Commission does not have the authority to prohibit motorized recreational and overnight camping access at Oceano Dunes State Vehicle Recreation Area (SVRA).
    • The Honorable Judge Tana Coates ruled in favor of the Specialty Equipment Market Association, EcoLogic Partners — a legal collaboration between the Off-Road Business Association (ORBA), American Sand Association (ASA), and American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) District 37 — and Friends of Oceano Dunes, ruling that the Coastal Commission abused its discretion by unilaterally ordering the elimination of off-highway vehicle (OHV) use at the Oceano Dunes SVRA.
    • This is a hard-fought victory for the motorized recreation community and the millions of enthusiasts who recreate at Oceano Dunes each year.
