News brought to you by Colby Valve
- Car & Driver – Scout’s Body-on-Frame Electric SUV and Pickup Take Aim at Rivian
- VW announces in May of 2022 that they had bought the rights to the Scout Nameplate
- we should see the first prototype SUV in 2025
- customer deliveries will commence in late 2026
- Underneath the stubby and undeniably International Harvester Scout–inspired styling, you’ll find a lot of VW Group parts, but no unibodies. The Scout SUV (and pickup that comes later) will use a skateboard-style ladder frame.
- Expect at least two motors, a battery big enough to earn a 300-mile range on an EPA report card, and optional off-road skid plates and tires.
- The Scout will compete with other on-/off-road battery-electric SUVs, mainly the Rivian R1S and GMC Hummer EV SUV.
- Car & Driver – The 2023 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Has Substantially Upped Its Game
- The 2.9-inch wheelbase stretch makes room by pushing the axle forward creating space for larger tires.
- 33s are standard. 35 were on the Bison prototype.
- 10.7” of ground clearance vs the old ZR2s 8.9”
- There’s also a significant gain in suspension travel; the front’s total increases from 8.7 to 9.9 inches. In back, total travel increases from 9.8 to 11.6 inches
- the approach angle improves from 30.0 degrees to 38.3 degrees
- the spare tire is positioned some 2.5 inches higher
- Normal 2023 Colorados position them closer to the leaf springs, but they’re still inboard. The wide-track ZR2 has the right answer: Its rear Multimatic DSSV dampers now live outboard of the leaf springs and the frame rails, and the lower mount is tucked up tight against the brake backing plate
- The ZR2’s only engine option is the turbo 2.7 I4 with an 8 speed automatic. It makes 310HP & 430tq at 3000 rpm. The old V-6 made 308hp & 275tq at 4000 rpm. The discontinued diesel made 181hp & 369tq and saddled you with a six-speed automatic.
- Fuel economy is up 1 mpg all around vs the old V6
- Towing is up to 6,000lbs from 5,000lbs
- Price is only up $1,600. ZR2 starts at $48,295
New contest: On May 8th we will be doing a show with Andy from Warn about recovery stories. Leading up to that show we would like you, our listeners, to write in to us with your own personal stories of when you recovered someone or were recovered yourself. We’ll be picking one story at random to win a Warn Medium Duty Accessory Kit!
