Trail Communications

Types of comms

  • Walkie Talkies (FRS) 
    • the usual range of an FRS device on channels 8-14 is less than one-half mile, but longer-range communications can be achieved on channels 1-7 and 15-22 depending on conditions and terrain
  • CB Radio
    • range of about 3 miles to 20 miles depending on the terrain
  • GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) (like Midland)
    • Upwards of 65 miles depending on conditions and range and wattage of radio
  • MURS (Multi-Use Radio Service)
    • The band is usable for personal or business two-way radio communications with up to 2 Watts of power
    • Handheld radios broadcasting on MURS frequencies can experience a range of two miles to eight miles depending on terrain and obstructions, while MURS Base Stations can reach up to 20 miles
  • VHF Radios (Like Rugged Radios)
    • Wattage dependent to range
    • Uses a “Business Band”
  • Ham
    • Wattage dependent to range
