Main Topic
How to Snow Camp!
Everything you need for snow wheeling. Check out episode 200 for our last snow wheeling episode.
Equipment
- Vehicle
- Air down & up tools
- Tire chains
- Recovery equipment
- Spare tire in case you can’t get a bead reseated
- Jack
- Firewood
- Either bring it or gather on site
- Dead standing wood is usually drier than dead wood on the ground
- Have something to process the wood
- Tent
- Try not to set up your tent directly under trees with heavy snow on them
- Sturdy in case of snow overnight
- Also snow camping can be extremely windy
- Warm Sleeping bag
- Rated temperature means you won’t freeze to death. Not that you will be comfortable
- Increase your comfort by wearing more clothes or adding blankets
- Wear a stocking cap to bed
- Maybe even a neck gaiter
- Put the clothes you plan to put on the next day in the bottom of your sleeping bag
- Put a water bottle like a Nalgene full of very hot water at the bottom of your sleeping bag
- Pee before getting into bed
- Do some jumping jacks before going to bed
- Under insulation
- Double up on sleeping pads
- If using a cot, use more insulation than you expect to need
- Heaters
- Hand warmers
- Propane
- Very wet. 1 gram of propane burned produces 1.64 grams of water
- Wood stove
- Diesel heater
- Battery heater
- Make sure to have plenty of venting
Bathroom
- All the summertime rules apply
- Dig that hole for your #2 or pack it out
Food
- Bring things that you mix with hot water to warm you from the inside
- Hot chocolate
- Cider
- Tea
- Coffee
- Soup mix
- Both breakfast & dinner should be hot meals
- Don’t drink too much. Alcohol lowers your core temperature and will make you have to pee in the middle of the night.
Clothes
- As mentioned in the sleeping section, bring a beanie & neck gaiter
- Down jacket
- Gloves
- Snow bibs
- Leg gaiters
- Snow boots or muck boots (neoprene style)
- Thick socks
- Pack a full extra pair of clothes
- Long johns
- Synthetic fabrics dry faster than natural but wool is a great option
- Sunglasses
Things to do when snow camping
- Sit around a hot fire
- Snow wheeling
- Practice vehicle recovery
- Anything to do with guns
- Hiking/snowshoeing
- Ice fishing
- Polar bear plunge
- Snowball fight!

Tips
- First aid kit
- Pack the snow down first with your rig
- Check the weather before going out
- Tell someone where you are going
- Cold drains batteries fast
- I like to start my truck and let it run for 10 minutes before going to bed if it has been sitting all day
- Chapstick
