!Listener Question!
TacticalGimli writes: Coming to the experts with a question. I have two daughters aged 13 and 10 and a son aged 2 (he’s still got a few more years before this question really applies to him) my girls are both super small for their ages. They are both ready to start taking a gun of their own into the woods for deer season and I need help picking out what gun and in what caliber to go with. Some of the details, we hunt public ground in southern Illinois, so it has to be either a shotgun with slugs, muzzleloader, or straight wall center fire rifle. If it is a centerfire rifle it has to either be a single shot or a bolt action with a magazine shelf/ solid mag, no rounds ca+n fit into a magazine.
gun choice- not really considering shotgun or muzzleloader. You can try to change my mind. So with a straight wall….do I go Single shot so it’s lighter for them to carry and easier on my wallet so I get get a better optic for them, but then that’s all it will ever be, just a single shot rifle. Or go bolt action, more options to choose from, but it would be harder to reload (remember they will have to open the bolt, twist the gun, throw in a new round, and then close the bolt) but it can be used later in life by them for any kind of other hunting making more options for them as they grow.
So the caliber debate- go 350 legend for the lighter recoil so they actually like shooting their gun, or on the flip side do I go 450 bushmaster for more power and less of a chance the deer runs far (remember we hunt public so I want to avoid messing up someone else’s hunt) I hunt with a 450 bushmaster myself, so I already have tons of ammo and both of them have shot mine.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to use this question on the podcast if you want. Thanks.
