Actual Text From the Missouri 2024 Fall Deer and Turkey Brochure
Drones You may use drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) to locate wounded deer and turkeys. Before launching a drone, you must get permission from the public or private property owner. To use a drone on a conservation area, you must get permission from a conservation agent. Drone operators do not need hunting permits, provided they are not the person who wounded the deer or turkey. While the drone is in flight, no one may have in their possession a firearm, bow, or crossbow, except for concealable firearms as defined in Chapter 571, RSMo. Concealable firearms possessed under this exception may not be used to take wildlife. For additional rules, see 3 CSR 10-7.410 of the Wildlife Code of Missouri
Section of Missouri law pertaining to the regulation: 3 CSR 10-7.410 of the Wildlife Code of Missouri
First, a summarization of a new Missouri law which permits the use of hunting to track wounded game animals.
Missouri recently made a significant change to its hunting regulations, allowing the use of drones for the first time to assist in tracking wounded game animals. Starting in the 2024 hunting season, hunters in Missouri can use drones to recover wounded deer, turkey, elk, and black bears. However, the use of drones for other purposes, such as pursuing or harassing wildlife, remains prohibited.
There are strict regulations governing drone usage. Operators must get permission from landowners before flying over private property and cannot carry weapons while operating the drone. The new rule aims to reduce the loss of wounded animals, making it easier for hunters to locate them.
This change reflects a broader trend in some states across the U.S. where technology is being integrated into hunting practices for ethical reasons, such as reducing animal suffering and preventing wastage.
The updated rules are part of broader changes introduced by the Missouri Department of Conservation to adapt to technological advancements while maintaining hunting ethics and safety.
