Topic Section – Can last as little as 10-15 minutes if we cover it that fast: So I’m going to be hunting earlier than planned, which means I now have to get all my meal preps in line, so let’s go into that.
1. Nutritional Needs for Backcountry Hunters
- High-Calorie Requirements: Backcountry hunting involves long days of hiking, heavy gear, and challenging terrain. Discuss how calorie needs increase significantly due to these factors. Mention the importance of balancing energy-dense foods with lightweight options.
- Macronutrient Breakdown: Emphasize the need for a balance of proteins (for muscle recovery), fats (for sustained energy), and carbohydrates (for quick energy).
2. Types of Food to Pack
- Dehydrated and Freeze-Dried Meals: These are lightweight and packable, making them ideal for backcountry use. Mention popular brands or how to prepare your own meals.
- High-Energy Snacks: Items like nuts, trail mix, energy bars, jerky, and nut butters are great for quick energy boosts.
- DIY vs. Store-Bought: Compare making your own food for the trip versus purchasing pre-packaged options. Some hunters prefer to make their own dehydrated meals for better nutrition control.
3. Lightweight and Packable Foods
- Weight-to-Calorie Ratio: Focus on foods that offer high calories for minimal weight. Examples include energy gels, olive oil packets, and powdered meal replacements.
- Compactness: Discuss how space is limited in a backpack, so food that packs small but delivers a lot of energy is crucial.
4. Meal Planning and Portion Control
- Pre-Trip Meal Planning: Stress the importance of planning every meal and snack ahead of time, so you don’t overpack or underpack food.
- Portion Control: Discuss how overpacking food can add unnecessary weight, while underpacking can lead to fatigue and reduced performance. Striking the right balance is key.
5. Water Considerations
- Hydration: Stress the importance of water and how it’s essential for both survival and optimal performance in the backcountry. Highlight the need to bring water filtration systems to ensure a clean and safe water supply.
- Rehydrating Meals: Discuss the water needed to rehydrate meals and how that should factor into water planning.

Personal Gear Chat and Updates:
Mike
- The Dove Report
- Optic was great
- Shotgun with an LPVO report.
- I learned there are a few ways to hunt them
The way I do, which is roam the dead trees and look for them up there.
Camp them, find a dead tree they like to fly into and just wait.
Decoys. Get in a field near corn and decoy them in. They’re literally eating the corn.
In the evening get near some water and decoy them.
Dave
Sam
- More optics updates.
- Drowned the LPVO in the beaver pond, took some video but going to go back up tomorrow to take the actual recording equipment to record better video.
- Almost lost it about four feet down. Told myself I shouldn’t throw it out that far and sure enough I threw it out that far. Got hooked on some dead willow, considered going in after it naked, but ended up freeing it.
Vince
- I somehow got convinced to dig a pond
- For
- Freaking
- Ducks
- Ordered a new gasblock for the Guardian test rifle after the fiasco from last time.
