Topic Section – Can last as little as 10-15 minutes if we cover it that fast: Gearing up for archery elk season in CO, let’s take a few minutes to talk about some of the things we look for when setting up a base camp to hunt from. Each cast member contributes their own ideas, stories, preferences, and so on, regardless of whether it’s elk or a deer camp. List of ideas below to brew up ideas of what to discuss.
1. Location Selection

  • Terrain and Accessibility: Choose a location that balances accessibility with proximity to elk habitats. Consider the terrain and how it will affect your hunting strategy.
  • Water Sources: Ensure there is a reliable water source nearby for both drinking and cooking.
  • Wind Direction: Set up camp in a location where the prevailing wind won’t carry your scent into the hunting area1.

2. Camp Setup

  • Shelter: Discuss the types of shelters you’ll use (tents, tarps, etc.) and how to set them up efficiently.
  • Cooking Area: Plan a designated cooking area that is downwind from your sleeping area to avoid attracting wildlife.
  • Safety Measures: Implement safety measures like bear-proofing your camp and having a first aid kit readily available2.

3. Equipment and Gear

  • Hunting Gear: Ensure everyone has the necessary hunting gear, including rifles/bows, ammunition, and appropriate clothing.
  • Navigation Tools: Bring GPS devices, maps, and compasses to navigate the hunting area effectively.
  • Communication Devices: Use radios or satellite phones to maintain communication, especially in remote areas3.

4. Environmental Considerations

  • Weather Preparedness: Prepare for varying weather conditions by bringing appropriate gear and clothing4.

Mike

  • Dove hunt in Eastern CO weekend after next.
  • Let’s talk about getting into dove hunting. What do you need?
Assume you have a shotgun and more or less know how to use it.
Your state’s dept of wildlife website for small game regulations and Dove season
Or get a brochure at big box stores.
Get a small game license and associated fees and stamps your state requires.
A state wildlife area or BLM with live and dead deciduous trees and running water.  River, creek, cow watering hole
Spend time before hand, few weeks trying to ID doves in your area, by flight and profile in flight.  Don’t just flies dies.
Use 7 ½ or 8 lead shot.  Remember the four B’s for shooting.  Butt Bird Beak Boom
  • Dove camp for two days.  Overland style.  Camp out of Prado, in tent with Prado water and power
camp fire or propane for cooking.  Will have fresh food and camp food depending on mood.
  • Navigation: knowledge of area and GPS
  • Gonna be hot af.  Bleah.  But get some.
