Let’s Go Hunt 022 – Squirrel Plug

Welcome to another episode of Let’s Go Hunt! – the everyman’s hunting podcast.. We aren’t experts, but we’re out there doing it. Join us on our journey!  As always we have:

Sam Alexander, who just ate a dozen french toast sticks.

Mike Gonçalves,  who’s quite frankly tired of the cold

And I’m Dave Packard, who keeps asking mother nature; “you holdin’?”

Tonight we’re talking about squirrels, broadheads, bullets and shot placement.

Dave correction: you CAN carry a handgun while bow hunting but it should be strictly for self defense

Squirrel hunting

Got a proper scope for the 10-22

Actual methods, what’s legal what’s not

Research provided still-hunting; there’s a lesson learned from reading that

Where to go

How to eat them?

Sam

  • Broadhead types
  • Mechanical vs fixed
  • I had G5 Montecs that I bought for that Audad texas hunt. Didn’t do any proper research on them, just went with the Sportsman’s Warehouse recommendation.
  • Blade number, been reading that two blades are generally better for penetration, while 3+ create larger wound “openings” that create better bloodtrails.
  • Two blades better for breaking through bone? Makes mechanical sense.
  • Single bevel vs double bevel? What does that mean? Scant research on how a single bevel will rotate through the body, so potentially more flesh damage? Single bevel easier to sharpen?
  • Double bevel, if they don’t spin through the target, would not dump a bunch of energy off and give better penetration, in theory.
  • I like how this also harkens back to actual ancient history with bows. Makes me want to go back and look up medieval broadheads… bodkin points for punching through armor. Are any of the elk out there wearing 16th century gothic plate?
  • Outro- Mike
