Listener Feedback

Steve H.

I just wanted to comment on the recent show in which the crew commented on the value of a 5 lb. + 300 Win mag as a once in a lifetime hunt rifle.  A few big problems

If you draw a sheep or goat tag you are likely going to train physically for at least 6 months, hopefully even 9. During that time you will be practicing hopefully with hundreds of rounds on shooting various distances, up angle and down angle in hopes of getting that shot. To think that anyone can fire hundreds of rounds with a 7.0 lb or less 300 Win mag or 300 short mag is going to be tough sledding. The first problem recoil out of those rounds. It is going to suck, the second thing is stability, I light rifle is less stable than a heavy one.

On the few DIY alpine style elk hunts I have done we carry 65 lb packs, do i want to add 3 lbs to a light rifle not when carrying it but definitely when shooting A three pound increase in a 66 pound load is less than 5%. I doubt many people could detect it. And when you leave base camp to find that sheep you are likely carrying , rifle , spotting scope, bivy bag , med kit, water and any other essentials . So the weight being carried will drop by 2./3 or more.

I have carried my 13 lb DPMS on some of these. Not great  but when I set it on my pack or tripod it does not move.  That is really important in 400 meter plus yard shooting.

Lastly , Rusty going on about judging sheeping at long range. 600 meters and out is not going to happen with a 14x scope. That is why a sheep hunter is also carrying a 60 -80 power spotting scope.
