4140 steel – not the best nor is it mil spec 40% carbon
4150 steel – 50% carbon harder molybdenum steel not mil spec
4150 CMV /41v50 Chrome moly vadanium ChMoV
Melonited vs parkerised
Mel is harder and doesn’t need chromelining and is better against corrosion
Stainless
Stainless doesn’t need a finish as much. Still can rust but doesn’t always
416 softer easier to machine higher sulfer content fails easier at low temps
416R has molybdenum and preforms better in cold but still easy to machine
17-4-PH Parcipitent Hardening Makes little pores to strengthen the steel 3-5x cost and isn’t a good machine gun barrel
Carbon fiber barrels
Still a steel barrel but has a carbon fiber wrap for heat mitigation and weight savings
Rifling
Button rifled cheapest and fastest rougher way to make it. It pushes a bit through the bore to add the rifling
Cut rifling cutter runs down barrel and expands a tiny bit each time oldest and a cleaner method could be the most accurate
Cold hammer forging barrels are hammered around a mandrel that is then screwed out of the barrel after it is completed
Gas legnths
Rifle length gas system, the gas port is roughly 12 inches from the chamber
A Mid-length system’s gas port is roughly 9 inches from the chamber.
A Carbine length system has its port approximately 7 inches from the chamber
Pistol length system has a port about 4 inches away.
